Plaaslike Rolprent, Moffie, Palm Drie Bifa-benoemings In

MOFFIE, die vierde rolprent deur die Suid-Afrikaanse regisseur Oliver Hermanus, het drie nominasies by vanjaar se British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) ingepalm, waaronder Beste Regisseur, Beste Deurbraakvervaardiger (Jack Sidey) en Beste Kinematografie (Jamie D Ramsay).

Wat ’n lekker manier om van die vliegtuig af te klim. Dis goeie nuus om te hoor dat ons fliek deel gaan wees van die BIFA-toekennings,” meen Hermanus. “Om erkenning te kry is ’n eer en ’n ware mylpaal vir die fliek. Ons het ’n wonderlike span gehad wat hieraan gewerk het, en om op hierdie manier gevier en erken te word, is waarlik ongelooflik.”

Die British Independent Film Awards is deur Elliot Grove en Suzanne Ballantyne gestig in 1998. Hulle was ook die kreatiewe breine agter die Raindance-rolprentfees in 1993. BIFA is ’n viering van die beste, mees innoverende en kreatiewe onafhanklike rolprente en rolprentvervaardigers in die VK. In September is MOFFIE, wat vervaardig is deur Portobello Productions en Penzance Films, met groot lof ontvang by die filmfees in Venesië, waar dit vir die eerste keer aan die wêreld bekendgestel is. MOFFIE is die tweede film deur Hermanus en slegs die vierde Suid-Afrikaanse film wat in ses-en-sewentig-jaar ’n amptelike uitnodiging na hierdie rolprentfees ontvang het. Dit is gevolg deur nog ’n uitverkoopte vertoning by die Londen-rolprentfees in Oktober, waar dit benoem is vir die Beste Rolprent-toekenning.

MOFFIE, wat van die begin af positief deur die media ontvang is, met Variety wat dit bestempel as ’n “Oliver Hermanus Meesterstuk”, is ook ingesluit by die Thessaloniki Filmfees in Griekeland en die Stockholm Rolprentfees in Skandinawië. Dit sal ook in Skotland, Ierland, Marokko en selfs Estonië vrygestel word, voordat dit op 13 Maart 2020 in plaaslike bioskope te sien sal wees.

Die fliek is sielvol en emosioneel en ek hoop dat gehore daarmee sal kan vereenselwig. Sommige kykers sal heel moontlik herinner word aan hulle eie tyd in die weermag,” sê Hermanus. “Dit was tot dusver verbasend om te sien hoe die rolprent oud SAW-veterane vir die eerste keer aanmoedig om oor hierdie tydperk in hulle lewens te praat.”

Kai Luke Brummer, Hilton Pelser, Matthew Vey, Stefan Vermaak en Ryan de Villiers kwyt hulle skitterend van hulle taak in hulle onderskeie rolle in die fliek. MOFFIE is vervaardig deur Eric Abraham en Jack Sidey, met Theresa Ryan-van Graan as mede-vervaardiger.

MOFFIE sal op 13 Maart 2020 in plaaslike bioskope begin draai.

MOFFIE, the fourth film by South African director Oliver Hermanus, has scored three nominations at the 2019 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) for Best Director, Best Breakthrough Producer (Jack Sidey) and Best Cinematographer (Jamie D Ramsay).
 
“What a great way to get off a plane! It’s such great news to have our film included in the BIFA nominations today,” exclaimed Hermanus. “Being recognised is an honour and a real milestone for the film. We have had an amazing team come together to make this film, and to be celebrated and acknowledged in this way is truly wonderful.”
The British Independent Film Awards was founded by Elliot Grove and Suzanne Ballantyne in 1998, who also founded the Raindance Film Festival in 1993. BIFA is a celebration of the best, most innovative and creative independent filmmaking and filmmakers in the UK. The Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, 1 December 2019 and will be hosted by comedian, actress and writer Aisling Bea.

In September MOFFIE, produced by Portobello Productions and Penzance Films, garnered acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. MOFFIE is the second film by Hermanus and only the fourth South African film to receive an official invitation to the Venice Film Festival in its 76-year existence. This was followed by a sold out screenings at the London Film Festival in October where the film was in competition for the Best Film Prize.
 
Having received raving reviews from international press to date, Variety hailing the film as ‘Oliver Hermanus’ masterpiece’,  MOFFIE will next feature at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece and the Stockholm Film Festival in Scandinavia. It will also premiere in Scotland, Ireland, Morocco and even Estonia, before heading for local screens on March 13th 2020
 
“The film is heartfelt and emotive, and I hope audiences will get a visceral experience. No doubt, for some, it will conjure up memories of their own time in the military,” says Hermanus. ‘It has been amazing thus far to see how the film is opening veterans of the SADF to speak about this time in their life for the first time.”
 
MOFFIE stars Kai Luke Brummer, Hitlon Pelser Matthew Vey, Stefan Vermaak and Ryan de Villliers. It is produced by Eric Abraham, Jack Sidey and co-produced by Theresa Ryan - van Graan.
 
MOFFIE will premiere in South Africa on 13 March 2020.
